‘Bible mysteries’ are hot. What really happened in biblical times?
Did Jesus have children? Was there really a flood? What were those strange plagues Moses brought about in Egypt? What about the star of Bethlehem, the walls of Jericho, John’s Apocalypse?
On this site, we aim to share with you what scientists think, say and write about the bible. We present the evidence historians, archeologists and theologists offer.
Because it’s fun. And because it’s interesting.
On the web, you won’t find many websites that deal with the bible in a truly reliable, objective way. Wherever you look: it’s atheists versus Christians. People who try to debunk the bible, versus people who aim to ‘prove’ that it’s all true.
But in the end, both camps are wrong. The bible is way too big for such simple answers. That's why we won't try to convert you into anything. What you believe, is your business. We only deal with facts.
Yes, there are some websites (and many books) that deal with the bible in an independent, objective way. But most of them are so terribly boring! While the subject is so much fun!
We try to be down to earth and to the point. If you feel like you want to know more about a particular subject, you can always read one of the books or articles we list under our 'sources'.
I’m a science journalist by profession (and I have a MSc/MA in anthropology and history).
It is my job to critically write about what scientists are doing. And I get to talk to a lot of scientists, and read many peer reviewed papers.
You will notice that usually, I refer to ‘me’ as ‘we’. That’s because the stuff you’ll find on this site isn’t something I have made up myself. I rely very heavily on the work of other researchers and writers. Whenever I say ‘we’, it should read: ‘scientists that have seriously and independently examined the bible’.
If you’re part of the ‘we’, please feel invited to join and share your thoughts!
This website isn’t written out of animosity, but out of curiosity. We're fascinated by the bible, not fed up with it. We’re not here to debunk the bible; we just want to find out how the stories you find in it ended up there.
Ok, we do make little jokes. But we won't bite, or lure you into atheism, satanism or what-ism-have-you. And no, we're not the antichrist. In fact, we're very normal, decent people, with jobs, houses and kids.
